GREENPEACE Pacific Campaign

The bombing of the RAINBOW WARRIOR by French military agents in July 1985
strengthened Greenpeace' s long term commitment to the Pacific. The fragile coral
reef environment of the Pacific, one of the planet's last frontiers, is seriously
threatened by increasing amounts of nuclear and toxic contaminants. In 1989,
the Greenpeace Pacific Campaign will be working in the region to protect unique
ecosystems and marine mammals, and prevent destructive activities from
damaging the integrity of the Pacific environment.

Greenpeace's goals are to work with the people of the region towards:

1) establishing a completely Nuclear Free Pacific by creating more restrictive
nuclear free areas such as ports which ban visits by nuclear powered/capable
vessels; ending transit of nuclear armed/powered vessels; ending French nuclear
weapons testing in the Pacific; banning missile flight testing; banning radioactive
waste storage; and stopping the expansion of nuclear industry into the Pacific.

2) establishing a Pollution Free Pacific by restricting pesticide use in the Pacific;
opposing export of products that are banned, severely restricted or unregistered
in their country of origin to the Pacific; opposing the transference of hazardous
technologies to the Pacific like Ocean Incineration; and opposing the shipment or
trade of waste through the Pacific and the hazards associated with such shipment.

3) Preserving Coral Reefs by establishing low-lying coral atolls as specially
protected areas, inherently part of the marine environment and restricted from
hazardous activities which threaten the environment (hazardous activities such as
disposing of nuclear or toxic chemical materials on coral atolls); portraying the
pacific reef environment as an interconnected fragile ecosystem - unique to the
planet.

4) Conserving Wildlife Species and Fish Stocks by phasing out irresponsible and
destructive fishing methods such as driftnets which entangle and drown marine
mammals; and the practice of "setting on dolphin" world-wide which is a very
destructive fishing method used to locate tuna - the associative bond has been
exploited, and is an unnecessary practice for tuna fishing.
