WHAT IS THE AMERICAN NUCLEAR SOCIETY? The American Nuclear Society is a professional organization devoted to advancing science and engineering related to the atomic nucleus. More than 12,000 scientists and engineers in the Society's membership are active in diverse fields of research, teaching, consultation, administration, and engineering. Since this not-for-profit scientific and educational organization was founded in 1954, a primary purpose has been the dissemination of information about nuclear science and technology. Informing the public concerning the role of nuclear power in assuring adequate energy supply in the U.S. and abroad now is considered a vitally important responsibility of the American Nuclear Society. This effort to increase public understanding of the promise of nuclear energy is carried out mostly through activities of Society members in 49 ANS Local Sections throughout the U.S. and by more than 1,200 ANS members in some 50 other countries around the world.
