Introduction A major international conference on the human environment was held in Stockholm in 1972 under the auspices of the United Nations. In the following year, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the World Health Organization collaborated in the preparation of a booklet entitled Nuclear Power and the Environment. This sought to show that the harm that may be caused by the use of nuclear power for electricity generation, in terms of its effects on the natural environment, is low compared to that which may be caused by other energy sources; and that nuclear power, in meeting essential energy requirements, may make a positive contribution to the quality of life and decrease the rate of degradation of the environment. In 1982 the IAEA and WHO published jointly a 195-page study, prepared with the advice of a distinguished editorial panel, offering an up-to-date review of the knowledge and experience gained during the decade since the Stockholm conference. It also identified a number of problems, actual and potential, and discussed proposed solutions. This booklet is a condensation of the 1982 study, using the latest available data.
