The energy debate has moved to the top of the agenda across the social, political 
and economic spectrum. Energy is the lifeblood of the economy, but Europe's 
current energy model fails to guarantee a secure, sustainable and affordable 
supply into the future. Insecure and expensive fuel supplies, persistent safety 
risks and the urgent threat of climate change call for an Energy [R]evolution.

Fuel dependency and soaring prices

Europe's energy system is characterised by increasing energy consumption, 
increasing costs, and an increasing dependence on fossil and nuclear fuel imports. 
The price of fossil fuels has tripled over the last decade and become more and more 
volatile. At the same time, our dependency on imported oil, coal and gas has risen 
to more than half our energy needs. (1)

According to the European Commission, the price of fuel imports totalled an 
estimated € 350 billion in 2008 (2) - money spent on the exploitation of finite 
natural resources, rather than sustainable jobs and economic development.
