Preface You are holding in your hands the first and necessarily imperfect edition of the "World Uranium Hearing Grey Book". Here it is, ready for the World Uranium Hearing in Salzburg, 13-19 September 1992. The Grey Book is meant to be a reference for people involved in the World Uranium Hearing. It is mostly made up of country by country surveys giving background information on the testimonies presented at the Hearing, and on many more cases. Included are two short articles: one on "nukespeak" to make the reader aware of how the language of the nuclear industry influences our speaking and thinking; and an article on the wastes produced by uranium mines. This year marks two historic commemorations: 500 years of European colonialism in the Americas, and 50 years after the beginning of the nuclear age. The World Uranium Hearing is set up to give people a voice who are suffering from the effects of the nuclear industry, and also the victims of colonialism. Most of the world's uranium production is carried out on lands of indigenous peoples. Nearly all atomic weapons have been tested on and under native peoples' lands. Their territories are now considered to be "appropriate" to host the deadly leftovers of nuclear technology: the radioactive waste. For more information on the purpose of the World Uranium Hearing contact the Hearing office to receive written and audio-visual material. Due to limited time and resources this documentation is not complete. Many questions remain. For example, information is rare about conditions in Eastern Europe. Also, some countries are given much more space than others, which does not indicate importance or seriousness of implications of uranium mining, weapons testing or nuclear waste storage in this particular country. We ask you to give us access to your information. We will collect it, and hopefully a second revised and much more complete edition of the World Uranium Hearing Grey Book will be published Information that we would have liked to publish for the big event in Salzburg includes: complete maps, covering all countries where uranium mining and atomic weapons testing is done, a survey of all countries where uranium mining is an issue, an explanation of uranium mining technology, the impact of radiation on living tissue, the politics of uranium, and the, until now, unsuccessful efforts to achieve a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Preparations for the Hearing required such intense effort that little time was left for writing and research. For a preliminary description of some of these issues please see the "World Uranium Hearing Briefing Book". I would like to especially thank those who helped in the last few days of production: Miles Goldstick for his help editing, Sabine Wirsing who made the maps, and Stephanie Hun who managed to keep us alive during a long night of printing. I hope this document will contribute to the success of the Hearing and, one day, to a better informed world. Esther Krumbholz, München, September 11, 1992. World Uranium Hearing Grey Book 1992
