PREFACE The report "Uranium Resources, Production and Demand", commonly referred to as the "Red Book", has been published jointly by the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at approximately two- year intervals since the mid 1960s. In 1986 the two agencies agreed that every second Red Book would focus only on recent developments and their impact on the short term (i.e. to the year 2000). Consequently, a major assessment of world uranium supply capabilities, and the associated longer term analysis of supply possibilities will be carried out only every four years. This report is the first of the interim Red Books. It presents results of a 1981 review of uranium supply and demand in the World Outside Centrally Planned Economies Areas (WOCA). It also contains information on uranium exploration activities, resources and production for some 46 countries for 1985 and 1986. NEA's responsibilities for the preparation of this interim report were carried out under the direction of the NEA Uranium Group. The main statistical data of this report will be updated during the course of 1988. The reader will find on the next page an order form to receive a free copy of the "Statistical Update 1988".
