AVLIS Impact on the Enrichment Market The primary objective of the U.S. enrichment enterprise is to provide the world's lowest priced product to enrichment customers. Placing a gaseous diffusion plant on standby and eliminating the backup advanced centrifuge system will account for SWU price reduction over the next decade. Starting as early as 1994, AVUS- produced SWUs can be phased in to lower prices even further. AVUS technology was chosen in June of 1985 to replace U.S. gaseous diffusion plants as they reach the end of their economic lives. AVUS was chosen because it demonstrated the most reliable production of enriched uranium at lowest cost across the entire range of significant figures of merit.
