The Centrifuge Enrichment Process The centrifuge process, for the enrichment of uranium, has now reached maturity and has taken its place in the nuclear scene. It has many advantages over other enrichment processes. Diffusion is now regarded by many as outdated mainly because of its extremely heavy energy requirements. Aerodynamic, laser and chemical processes are still in their infancy. The centrifuge process is available now. Moreover, it has great potential for improvement with the added advantage that such improvements can be incorporated into plants during the construction period. The modest size of an economic increment of capacity means that plants can be built on a short time scale with low financial risk, so making it possible to respond more easily to changing market conditions. These features are clearly demonstrated by the progress of the Urenco/Centec organisation described in the following pages. Urenco is an established international company which is already selling enrichment services. The best of the technology from development programmes in three countries has been assimilated into the design of the two demonstration plants which started production in 1976. Design work has been completed for a standard commercial plant module of optimum size for the progressive expansion of Urenco/Centec capacity. Such a plant is eminently suitable for enrichment projects carried out in collaboration with other partners.
