Experimental and Research Reactors

The first nuclear reactor was constructed amid tight wartime secrecy, in a disused 
squash court under Stagg Field football stadium at the University of Chicago. 
Construction of the reactor began in November 1942 and took less than a month. 
Bricks were machined out of graphite. In some of the bricks were imbedded balls 
of uranium metal or compressed uranium oxide powder; uranium oxide had to be 
used because at that time only 56oo kg of pure uranium metal were available.
