BACKGROUND TO NNC

NNC carries out the design, project management of overall contracting and 
construction, and commissioning to the final operating stage, of electricity 
generating plant spanning nuclear steam supply systems and complete station 
(turnkey) contracts. This role has been extended into the fossil-fuelled power 
station field, exemplified by the 2000 Megawatt oil-fired plant at Inverkip in 
Scotland completed to cost and construction schedule in 1979.
NNC was formed in the 1970's by amalgamating staff and facilities of two specialist 
design-construction companies which themselves coalesced from five competing 
nuclear industrial consortia created during the earlier years of the commercial use 
of nuclear energy beginning over a quarter century ago. NNC office and laboratory 
centres are at Knutsford (headquarters) and Risley in Cheshire, and Whetstone, near 
Leicester.
NNC thus combines all the particular technology and unique experience of its 
forerunners embodied in the building and successful operation of 11 nuclear power 
stations in the UK and two overseas aggregating 24 reactors and 7650 MW net design 
electrical output. NNC is completing three more twin-reactor stations in 1982 each of 
1200/1250 MW(e) design capacity, and is at work on the construction of two more of 
similar output for completion by 1987 for the UK Generating Boards thus endowing 
NNC with a total UK nuclear experience to date of 16 stations with a design capacity 
of 13,500 MW(e).
NNC is a joint State-Industry enterprise. Major shareholders are the British 
Government (35%) administered through the United Kingdom Atomic Energy 
Authority (UKAEA); the British General Electric Company (30%); and British 
Nuclear Associates Ltd (35%) comprising holdings by Babcock Power Co., Head
Wrightson Teesdale, Sir Robert McAlpine & Son, Northern Engineering Industries, 
Strachan & Henshaw, Taylor Woodrow Construction, and Whessoe.
