Foreword

Citizens' groups in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) who are
working for environmental protection and a sustainable way of life, have a right
to know about, and to influence, investments which affect these aims.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is the newest
international institution investing in the region, active across 25 countries.

This booklet tries to explain the EBRD's relevance to the environment and sustainable
development in CEE. It does not attempt to provide a comprehensive study of the
Bank's environmental performance.

The objective is to promote understanding of the Bank so that environmentalists can
engage it in dialogue and seek to have a positive influence over investments which
will shape the environment in Central and Eastern Europe for many years to come.

Since policy and practice in the European Bank are subject to change, the
description provided in this booklet should be regarded as a guide and not
definitive. The organisations and sources listed at the end may provide the
reader with information about developments and changes in the Bank.
