INTRODUCTION

Even though opinions differ as to the speed of these phenomena, population
growth and the development of new regions of the world are inevitably leading
to increased energy needs, and particularly an increase in electricity consumption.

The world electricity market responds to general economic conditions, but also to
more specialized political and strategic preoccupations. Besides hydropower, the
only renewable energy source that can be mobilized in large quantities, but which
is not transportable, the market is dominated by three main players: coal, natural
gas, and nuclear energy (fig.1).

In the past few years, the very low levels of fossil fuel prices, the opening-up and
internationalization of the markets, the appearance of new technological data, and
preoccupations concerning environmental protection have significantly modified
the competitive positions of these three main energy technologies.
Thus, for each of them, to face up to the evolutions that will continue and
depending on its specific characteristics, new solutions have been developed.
