"Source term" refers to the quantity, timing and characteristics of the radioactivity that would be released to the environment in the event of a severe accident in a nuclear power plant. Renewed interest in this important issue stems from observations that the 1979 accident at the Three-Mile-Island plant released less radioactive material than had been expected under the circumstances. This report summarises the findings of an international group of experts who have compared and analysed all of the information on source terms currently available.
