Uit de publicatie:
Radiation from the ground Mankind has evolved in a naturally radioactive environment, with radiation coming from outer space, from the earth, from atoms within the body and even from burning wood and cultivating ground. This natural background has been added to by x-rays and other medical and industrial use of radiation; through testing nuclear weapons; burning coal and through air travel and, to a very small extent, the activities of the nuclear electricity industry. Radiation was unknown a century ago but scientists have learned to detect, measure and control it, and to employ it usefully in industry and medicine. However, the idea of radiation is new to most people, and may cause alarm if not explained.
