INTRODUCTION Did you know that your house and the contents of your stomach are radioactive? There is nothing new about radiation. Although we discovered and named it just 100 years ago, we have lived with it since the beginning of time. The earth is naturally radioactive, so is the air we breathe, the food we eat and the ground we stand on. We know that large amounts of radiation are harmful but modem science has allowed us to develop relatively safe ways of using radiation. Radiation is all around us. Friends who have diabetes, arthritis or high blood pressure have probably been treated with drugs developed with radiation, the tyres on your car may have been treated with radioactive materials to make them more durable and puncture resistant, and photocopiers have radioactive sources to stop the paper sticking together. Few of us think much about radiation, but most of us benefit from a large range of products and services made possible by radioactive materials.
