YOUR RADIATION DOSE

Nuclear waste, radon gas, Chernobyl, over-exposures in radiotherapy- radiation
has become of concern to us all. But there is nothing new about radiation. Although
discovered less than a century ago, we have lived with it since the beginning of time.

However hard we try, we cannot avoid it. Natural radiation comes from four sources:
outer space, the earth itself, the air we breathe, and all our food and drink. In
addition, we use radiation in medicine, manufacturing industry, agriculture,
pollution control, research, and in the production of energy in nuclear power stations.

We cannot see, hear, or feel this radiation, but we can detect it with simple
instruments.

We know that very large amounts of radiation can harm us, and even small
amounts may carry some risk. So we should know how much radiation we get
from each source. This leaflet enables you to work out just how much radiation
you and your family get from natural and from manmade sources.
