HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The principles of radiation protection which have now been tested and applied in more than half a century of professional experience in science, industry and medicine, originated in the early demands for radiation protection standards. During the 1920s these demands led to the setting up of national radiation protection committees in Europe and the US and eventually to the establishment of the International Commission on X-ray and Radium Protection in 1928. This body ended its activities just before World War II, but its direct successor, the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), is still today the acknowledged authority in the field. Its recommendations are accepted in practice, if not in law, as the starting point and basis for national protection standards world-wide.
