Foreword Reduction of doses to workers in nuclear power stations has always been a vital aim in radiation protection. The most effective measure to achieve this aim is the application in daily practice of the basic principle of optimisation in radiation protection, also known as the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle. The EC Directorate General for the Environment, Nuclear Safety and Civil Protection has taken a series of measures to support the efforts of national authorities in implementing this principle. Among these activities was the establishment of a programme for the direct exchange of information and experience between those responsible for operational radiation protection in light water nuclear power reactors operating throughout Europe. At present light water reactor operators from the EU member states as well as from Finland, Hungary, Sweden and Switzerland are contributing to the programme. In order to achieve this and have a common basis for the discussions during the annual meeting with the respective experts, the operators transmitted their collected data on occupational doses to the Commission which then analysed the values and established the relevant statistics. This second publication in that context summarises the data collected on job-related doses during eleven years' operation (1981-1991) of this pan-European programme. It appears at the present moment because the amount of data now gathered permits the presentation of reliable statistical results and because changes in the field of practical radiation protection are on the horizon. Following the implementation of new concepts in radiation protection direct comparison of former and future dose values will not be possible without additional interpretation. The data and their analyses should not be used to assess the effectiveness of the implementation of the ALARA principle in different power stations or to provide arguments for a sort of competition between power stations. The aim is rather to enable those with responsibilities for radiation protection to select more precisely the fields of future action in the light of the very detailed information of the data bank.
