Report of the Meeting on Cancer Risk among Nuclear Industry Workers

INTRODUCTION

A meeting was held at the International Agency for Research on Cancer on June 9 and
10 1988 with the aim of investigating the possibility of future epidemiologic studies
of cancer risk among nuclear workers (1). The participants are listed in Appendix B.
They included nominees of the nuclear industries from various countries, as well as
epidemiologists and radiation physicists and biologists who have been involved in
studies of exposure to ionizing radiation in the occupational environment.
The specific objectives of the meeting were as follows:
- to identify groups of nuclear workers not yet investigated;
- to make a preliminary assessment of the size and level of exposure of
the groups thus identified, the availability of employment, medical and
dosimetry records, and the feasibility of a follow-up for cause of death
of individual workers;
- to discuss the possibility of a collaborative investigation of cancer risk
among these groups;
- to set up a feasibility study group if sufficient agreement vas apparent.

(1) The term "nuclear workers", throughout this report, designates workers in the
power production and defense industries, as well as workers involved in the fuel
cycle industry, including enrichment and reprocessing of fuel but excluding
underground mining.
