Introduction

The health effects of reactor emissions in Suffolk county have been the focus
ofattention since 1970, when information became available on releases from
a 20 watt graphite moderated research reactor at the Brookhaven National Laboratory,
which began operations in 1950 (May and Stewart. 1970) (Hull, Gilmartin and Smith,
1970) and a larger water cooled research reactor that replaced it in the mid-1960s.
In 1972, Sternglass found that doses within a few miles from the BNL graphite reactors
were comparable to those produced by nuclear fallout and routine releases from
commercial reactors that include iodine-131 and strontium-90. (Sternglass, 1972,
(Sternglass, 1973). A series of recent articles and books published by members of the
Radiation and Public Health Project have associated fission products released from
both bomb tests and reactors with increases in cancer rates, infant mortality, and
low birthweight live births. (Sternglass, Gould, Mangano, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 and
1997).
