Interaction of Prenatal Irradiation and Postnatal Disease in the Aetiology of Childhood Cancers G. W. Kneale and A. M. Stewart Cancer Epidemiology Research Unit, University of Birmingham INTRODUCTION The Oxford Survey of Childhood Cancers (OSCC) began in 1955 and three years later published some early findings, (1). At this time two risk factors for childhood malignancies were noted: the one which attracted most attention was prenatal exposure to a diagnostic dose of ionizing radiation and subsequent death from leukaemia or a solid tumour, and the other was an attack of bronchitis or pneumonia within two years of a leukaemia death.
