FOREWORD

The IAEA has an integrated waste management programme and assists its Member
States in the safe and effective management of nuclear wastes by organizing the
exchange and dissemination of technical information on the subject, providing
guidance and technical assistance and supporting research. A review of Agency
activities in this field shows that about 150 technical reports, proceedings
and other books have been published and distributed to Member States since the
establishment of the waste management programme in 1957.

This publication, "Radioactive Waste Management: A Status Report", briefly
summarizes the activities of the IAEA and its Member States in the area of
radioactive waste management. The information is presented in two major sections.
One section presents a brief overview of the Agency's programme, and the other
section provides a status report on the activities in many of the Agency's Member
States. The information presented in this report is based on published material,
and on written and oral communication with experts in several countries.

The usefulness of this report will be examined by the Secretariat and experts in the
field to determine the value of preparing such a publication on a continuing basis
(a two- or three-year cycle). Expanding the scope of any future effort to include
environmental considerations and recent regulations, laws and policy statements
affecting the waste management plans of Member States will also be considered.
Comments or suggestions from Member States to improve this report or to make
it more accurate and complete are welcome.
This report has been prepared by the IAEA, Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle,
Waste Management Section.
