The international conference Euradwaste 1999 on the 'Radioactive waste management strategies and issues' was held in Luxembourg from 15 to 18 November 1999. This event was the fifth in the series of conferences organised by the European Commission (EC) originally to present the results of research projects funded within successive five-year Euratom research programmes in the fields of radioactive waste management and disposal partitioning and transmutation and decommissioning. The purpose of this venue was enlarged in order to: 1. give a comprehensive overview of all EC activities in the field of radioactive waste management including research and development, regulatory aspects, assistance to central and east European countries (CEECs) and newly independent States (NIS) and safeguards; 2. review the state of the art in radioactive waste management strategies and issues; 3. address the issues of concern to the public and decision-makers. Three panel discussions were organised to address the following issues: 1. 'The challenges in the management of radioactive waste and the ways forward'; 2. 'Partitioning and transmutation' in a strategic perspective; 3. 'The status of research for radioactive waste disposal: between demonstration and implementation'. There were 27 oral presentations all made by invited speakers and 51 poster presentations. The speakers presented overviews and analyses of the strategies andissues in the management of radioactive waste, summaries of the results of EC-funded research projects and overviews of EC activities, while posters enabled detailed presentations of EC-funded research projects and activities.
