1. Introduction

The deep geological disposal of radioactive wastes has been proposed by the
nuclear industry as the solution to it's most intractable problem, namely what to
do with the wastes generated from nuclear power plants and reprocessing facilities.
It is constantly claimed that an 'international consensus' exists on the scientific
acceptance of the concept.

It is the purpose of this review paper to briefly examine the deep disposal concept,
the principles underlying it and the science upon which it is based, and to discuss
the validity of the claimed consensus.
