Introduction

This book is about poisoning the seas. It is also about words and their users; about
euphemisms, soft words designed to conceal hard meanings; technical terms that
confuse the reader with science; and jargon, the outworn language of specialists who
have lost the ability to use plain words. Sometimes the three combine or interchange;
a technical term becomes jargon - or even a euphemism. Their effects are constant -
to make non-specialists think the subject beyond their understanding, and to make
them feel that things are better than they are.
The users are either scientists or lawyers, experts in understatement and the
euphemistic phrase, who sprinkle their pages with technical terms, construct
sentences from scientific or legal jargon and, through language, establish a
monopoly over the subject which others attribute to knowledge. This book
aims to break that monopoly.
