II INTRODUCTION Investigation results presented in this report are part of the Dutch contribution to the activities of the international Seabed Working Group. This investigation was aimed at compiling detailed sedimentological information for two areas identified by the Seabed Working Group as being potentially suitable for subseabed disposal of high level radioactive waste. The present investigations encompass one area extending between 30° N and 32° N, 29° W and 30° W and another area extending between 30°30' N and 32° N, 23° Wand 26° Win the Northeast Atlantic Ocean (Fig. 1). In the westernmost study area situated west of Great Meteor and Hyeres Seamount nine piston cores were collected during a six day survey in October 1980 by HNLMS "TYDEMAN", research vessel of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The second area, east of the Great Meteor Seamount, is part of the Madeira Abyssal Plain. Seventeen piston cores were collected from this area in November-December 1980 during a ten day survey by HNLMS "TYDEMAN". Data on core stations and locations are shown in a list and in station maps (see Appendix). In addition to piston coring and 3.5 kHz echosounding, the two study areas were also investigated using deep penetration seismics. With the exception of some 3.5 kHz data, geophysical results will not be presented in this report. Only the most relevant literature has been cited.
