INTRODUCTION TO THE VOLUME

GENERAL BACKGROUND

The present volume of the 'Mededelingen van de Rijks Geologische Dienst' is an
account of work sponsored by the government of the Netherlands in the framework
of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (QECD)/Nuclear
Energy Agency (NEA) coordinated programme on subseabed disposal of radioactive
waste.

The objective of the NEA coordinated programme is to provide an international
assessment of the technical feasibility and long-term safety of subseabed disposal
of high-level radioactive waste as a multi-media· concept with marine sediments as
the primary isolation barrier. Additional information on the coordinated programme
may be obtained from the various research establishments involved, the Ministry of
Economic Affairs of the Netherlands and the OECD/NEA, 38 Boulevard Suchet,
75016 Paris, France.

The coordinated programme mentioned above is managed by the Seabed Working
Group (SWG), a non-exclusive cooperative organization of a number of NEA
member states, which have a national subseabed disposal research programme.
The coordinated consists of the activities of several task groups of which
the Site Selection Task Group (SSTG) is only one.
