Spent Fuel Transportation Introduction American industries have been making, using, and transporting radioactive materials and wastes for more than 40 years. The nuclear-fueled powerplants that operate in this country are our second largest source of electrical energy. They also require nuclear materials transportation. A major transportation need of these powerplants is to safely move high-level radioactive wastes in the form of used or "spent" fuel, to a permanent disposal site. The U.S. Congress passed the Nuclear Waste Policy Act in 1982 calling for completion of the first permanent disposal site (repository).
