INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION The article by Andre Gorz in this issue of RA was originally written over four years ago, but it anticipates most of the pressing problems of nuclear energy which have been raised by the accident at Three Mile Island. The dangers, he reminds us, are not only those of accidents and disposal of radioactive waste - as real as those are – but also the kind of social and political developments called for by the growth of nuclear power. As he wrote then, the choices about nuclear energy are ''political in the deepest sense of the word.'' The political nature of these choices is revealed by the attempts of supposedly independent and apolitical scientists and technicians to drum up support for nuclear energy. With all the contortions that the experts go through in trying to convince the public of the safety of nuclear energy, their arguments are finally couched in the political-economic contexts of OPEC control of foreign oil, fear of inflation, a new- found and deeply cynical concern for the lives of coal miners, etc. The evaluation of the relative safety of nukes is a consequence of the kind of society these professionals think is possible and preferable.
