Introduction The growth and development of countries in the Asian region has been marked by an increasing demand for nuclear science and technology. One of the most important activities of the IAEA in Asia and the Pacific is its programme of technical co-operation, which contributes to the development of Member States through the application of nuclear technology in agriculture, medicine, industry, and energy. In the Asian region, levels of attainment in each of these fields greatly varies from one country to another. The diversity provides exciting opportunities for technical co-operation among these countries to ensure the fullest contribution of nuclear science and technology to economic and social development. Regional planning accelerates self-sufficiency in scientific disciplines and appropriate technologies by combining intellectual and physical resources. Regional projects foster technical co-operation, greater sharing of resources - including facilities, equipment, and manpower - and greater pooling of knowledge and close communication between scientists. Technical co-operation among developing countries in the Asian region is further supported and promoted by the developed countries in the region and by interregional institutions.
