The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an autonomous intergovernmental organization founded in 1957 in accordance with a decision of the General Assembly of the United Nations. Its statutory mandate is "to enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health and prosperity throughout the world and to ensure, so far as it is able, that assistance provided by it or at its request or under its supervision or control is not used in such a way as to further any military purpose". By IAEA Statute the Agency is authorized "to foster the exchange of scientific and technical information on peaceful uses of atomic energy". This INIS Periodic Report forms one element of the IAEA's programme. It presents the status and achievements of the International Nuclear Information System (INIS) in 1994.
