Foreword

This is another New Items booklet dealing with an International Financial
Institution, in this specific case the IMF. That fund has been criticized for many
years by environmental organisations for neglecting environmental consequences
of its structural adjustment programmes. At this moment IMF is playing an
increasing role in Central and Eastern European countries and there is a need
that environmentalists in the region are aware of the potential relation between
structural adjustment programmes and environmental degradation and the
possibilities to prevent these. With this booklet we wanted to give you the basic
knowledge about this financial institution, its structure, decisionmaking procedures
and its operations in developing countries. We regret that this booklet is more
oriented on the experience within the Third World countries and not so much
showing examples and experiences from CEE region but we hope that knowing
more about this institution would. help to initiate assessment of the IMF
activities in CEE and their impacts to the environment and social relations.
