Introduction

THE PRESENT rate of economic growth requires an enormous consumption of natural
resources which results in the rapidly increasing destruction of the environment.
The limits which the ecological systems can tolerate are continually exceeded and
thus both the natural basis of our lives and our very existence are endangered;
without the "commodity environment" no economy or life is possible. It follows
that the most important task society has these days is to preserve these basic
resources essential to existence, and not to squander the limited resources still
remaining or to wilfully destroy the environment, which has been the case up to
now. The aim must be to bring about a swift and efficient change in both attitudes
and methods by which resources are obtained and used.

The mode of action we desire must protect the environment in an efficient and
effective way worthy of humanity. The measure of all things has to be the degree to
which ecological systems can be, exploited without upsetting the ecological balance.

In the following discourse, a definition of sustainability and its significance for
the economic production of energy is given. The scenarios for withdrawal from
the utilization of atomic energy, which are based on this definition, are presented
and examined within the framework
of this study.
