Ideas and Goals

10 years after the explosion of the nuclear reactor in Chernobyl, schools all over
the world will use this opportunity to call attention to the plight of the victims
of the catastrophe and to change global energy policy towards a just and sustainable
use of energy - in the interests of children and young people all over this planet,
the ones who will have to live with the consequences of our present energy policies.
The idea of having a global project day of solidarity to commemorate the catastrophe
of Chernobyl has found wide-spread acclaim with schools and teachers from all
over the world. The project provides a framework for teaching those goals which
are fundamental to modern education. The philosophy of the UNESCO Schools
provides an excellent basis for this: solidarity and responsibility towards
disadvantaged people and the victims of the catastrophe; furthermore, it
encourages us to deal with vital questions concerning future energy policy,
democratic participation in shaping the world of the future, and an emphasis
on direct action.
Politically, this project day can emphasize the fact that young people have a high
stake in articulating their interests from the grassroots Level. This is especially
important, for often ecologically fair, sustainable energy concepts are dismissed at
international conferences as not being popular enough with the everyday citizens.
