NON-AVAILABILITY OF BOTH DGS DURING MODERATOR SHUT DOWN

DG-1 was not available due to problem with starting air motor. DG-2 was kept inservice in parallel with grid and moderator and process water systems were under shut down. At 11.30 hours, DG-2 tripped due to mal-operation of 45 FR (fire protection) relay. Both DGs became unavailable for a period of 30 minutes.
BASIS FOR RATING: Even though both DGs of Unit I were not available, both DGs of other units were in poised state. 415 V Class III tie and 6.6 KV Class IV tie of both the units were in poised state. Further secondary side of both banks of boilers of Unit 1 were filled with water. Fire fighting pump was in operation and fire water valves to boilers were operable. Deaerator was full with gravity make up to boilers available. Hence all precautions were taken and existing for ensuring core cooling all the time under all conditions. Hence Level 0 was selected.
DIFFICULTIES IN RATING: None.
