LOSS OF POWER SUPPLY TO CLASS IV SYSTEMS AND UNIT OUTAGE

At 14.23 hours of 3.3.92, when both MAPS Units 1 & 2 were operating at 170 MW(e), there was grid disturbance resulting in a dip in the grid frequency and 230 KV bus voltage at MAPS. Automatic Voltage Regulator of Unit II got changed over to Manual mode and subsequently Unit-2 turbine tripped on under frequency and the Reactor tripped on less than 2 Primary Circulatory pumps running logic. MAPS unit-1 came on house load on Grid under frequency but further collapse in Grid caused loss of supply to the bus fed by start up Transformer resulting in tripping of four Primary Circulating pumps connected to the Start up Transformer and Reactor tripped on 'Boiler differential temperature high' logic. Class III supply was restored immediately in both units by Diesel Generators and there was no interruption on Class II supply. Hence no safety system was affected. Grid supply was restored within 37 minutes.
The event can be rated as Level 0 under A-1R category of Table 1 of INES user's manual.
