REPAIR OF REACTOR PRESSURE VESSEL HEAD PENETRATION

By now all the penetrations in the Ringhals 2 reactor pressure vessel head have been examined either by ultrasonic or by eddy current tests. All but one with indications was tested by dye penetrant also. The cracks found were longitudinal. According to the Utility one was in a place where it could have caused leak. However its depth was a bare 4mm - one fourth of the wall thickness - and its length 16mm only. The crack is to be taken away by electrical spark treatment. Prior to start up the Utility has to ask the permission of the Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate (SKI).
Corresponding tests are in progress in Ringhals 3, as soon as they are completed their results will be reported to INES.
