MANUAL REACTOR TRIP DUE TO FAILURE OF DRAIN VALVE IN AUTOCLAVE CIRCUIT

Wolsong unit 1 was operated at rated power. At 01:57 on September 24, 1995, one of the four drain valves in Autoclave circuit was opened due to its yoke sleeve failure. Heavy water in Primary Transport System was released to the D2O collection tank and drain header.
Most of D2O leaked to D2O collection tank and was returned to the primary system, and only 0.25 tons of D2O tons of D2O was leaked to the floor of D2O Feed Pump room 403 in containment.
Reactor and turbine was in manual shutdown by the operator's decision in accordance with the requirement of Technical Specification.
Wolsong unit 1 was returned to power operation on Sep. 25 after repair of the drain valve. There was no significant release of radioactive materials outside the reactor building and no unplanned exposure to employees.
