TAEA was informed on Friday (8 January 1999) that an overexposure to radiation from Co60 source occurred (approximately 88 Ci) which was broken into pieces by scrap dealers. The capsule of the source was not ruptured. The experts of TAEA have found the source and transported it safely to the waste treatment unit of Cekmece Nuclear Research Center. Now the accident area is under control. The five seriously affected patients have received an estimated absorbed dose of between 3-6 Gy and are being well cared for in the Cerrahpasa University Hospital and are all in isolation. The 1 of 5 moderately affected patients have received an estimated absorbed dose of between 2-4 Gy and the rest of them received an estimated absorbed dose between 1-2 Gy and are being treated in another local hospital. There is only one patient, up to now, who showed signs of radiation induced burns. These burns are on two fingers and amputation should not be needed since the estimated absorbed dose is less than 20 Gy.
