INTRODUCTION

The High Flux Reactor (HFR) Petten belonging to the Institute for Advanced
Materials of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, is one of
the most powerful multi-purpose materials testing reactors in the world.

The HFR is of the tank-in-pool type, it is light-water cooled and moderated, and it
is operated at 45 MW. The reactor provides of a variety of irradiation possibilities
in the reactor core, the reflector region as well as outside the reactor vessel in
so-called poolside facilities. Twelve horizontal beam tubes are installed for
research with neutrons. Reactor operation has been entrusted to the Netherlands
Energy Research Foundation (ECN).

In 1995 the HFR was operated according to schedule. Its utilization rate was
comparable to the previous years. The HFR has strengthened its leadership as
supplier of radioisotopes for the radiopharmaceutical industry. More than 65% of
the European production took place at the HFR. The recent start of the molybdenum
production plant at Petten will further enhance the role of the HFR as a key facility
for Nuclear Medicine. The HFR continued its invaluable role as irradiation test bed
for the Fusion Community: six new experiments on first wall structural materials
(mainly martensitic steels) and plasma facing components started. An irradiation
embrittlement project, as part of the European Network AMES (Ageing Materials
Evaluation and Studies) was launched. A new experiment series on transmutation
of actinides and fission products started, as part of the European collaboration
EFTIRA (Experimental Feasibility of Targets for Transmutation).

An important factor is the close cooperation between JRC and ECN on all those
aspects of nuclear research and technology which are required to maintain the key
position of the HFR amongst the European research reactors.

Now, in a joint effort, both organizations take a much more market-oriented
approach and offer their long-standing and recognized competence in exploiting
a powerful, reliable set of nuclear facilities to interested parties worldwide.
