Springfields Works, which is today recognised as a leading world centre for nuclear fuel products, is the base of the Fuel Division of British Nuclear Fuels plc. Springfields was established in 1946 to meet the needs of the early British experimental nuclear reactors and for the UK military programme. Later, the emphasis of work at the plant was re-directed to the UK civil nuclear energy programme, pioneered by the world's first industrial-scale nuclear power station at Calder Hall in Cumbria. The plant has supplied all the uranium metal and uranium oxide fuel for the UK's Magnox and Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors, and is able to supply fuel for all the major types of nuclear reactor worldwide. A substantial increase in the scale and range of operations and expansion into international markets has resulted in continual development of facilities at the site.
