SECTION 1 : INTRODUCTION 1.1 British Nuclear Fuels Limited was incorporated as a private limited company on February 16th 1971. The Atomic Energy Authority Act 1971 transferred to it that part of the undertaking of the UKAEA which was basically its Production Group and which had provided nuclear fuel cycle services on a commercial basis for much of the previous decade. All the shares in the Company are held by the Secretary of State for Energy (apart from one held by the Treasury Solicitor). They were previously held by the UKAEA on his behalf and were transferred to him on August 3rd 1981. 1.2 During the Company's financial year ending on March 31st 1982 total sales by the Company and its subsidiaries were £413 million (including export sales of £67.5 million), resulting in a trading profit of £79 million (Ref 1). Assets employed totalled £743 million and the average number of persons employed by the Company was 16,290. 1.3 A general description of the nuclear fuel cycle services required for Pressurised Water Reactors (PWR) and Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactors (AGR) is given in Appendix E of the CEGB's Statement of Case (Ref 2) and is not, therefore, repeated here. However, for ease of reference, 1 diagram illustrating the nuclear fuel cycle is produced as BNFL 3; BNFL 4 and 5 outline in more detail the stages with which the Company is concerned in:
