1.1. Childhood thyroid carcinoma. EPIDEMIOLOGY Thyroid cancer represents less than 1% of all the malignant tumors, when all age groups are taken into consideration. In children and adolescents it represents around 396 of all the tumors with an estimated annual incidence of around 0.2 to 0.4 cases per million children. The incidence of this tumor does not vary significantly among the European and Non European countries with the exception of Ukraine and Belarus which were hit by the radiation fall outs of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster (1986). When talking about Paediatric thyroid carcinoma it is essentially its differentiated forms (papillary and follicular) we are referring to. Anaplastic carcinoma is not present in the first few decades of life, whereas when medullary carcinoma occurs, it is generally in the field of multiple endocrine neoplasia and is on a hereditary / familiar basis. AETIOLOGY Advanced studies in molecular biology have permitted significant progress in the comprehension of the aetiology of thyroid carcinomas. Genetic rearrangements occurring in the proto-oncogene RET or the proto-oncogene TRK have been recognised as specific factors for what regards the papillary forms, the most common in childhood.
