UPDATED BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE NUCLEAR REACTOR ACCIDENT, USSR

Updated Summary of data situation with regard to activity measurements (1)

As of Sunday morning, 18 May 1986, the following measurement data have
been received on the situation in the following 30 countries:

Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark
Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, France, Greece Hungary, Iceland, Ireland,
Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland,
Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, USA, USSR, Yugoslavia.

Not all data received are suitable for the particular needs of WHO for assessing the
risk to human health. For that reason, a request of measurement data of specified
types vas telexed to radiation protection authorities and laboratories involved in
measurements.

Variations within each country are large because of the substantially increased ground
deposition of radioactive material where there has been rain to wash the material out
from the air. It is therefore not yet easy to give representative average values for
countries. What the data permit, at most, is to give an overall picture of the
situation, to indicate maximum values, and to show general trends.
