fallout, measurements and consequences

Summary
This report contains a compilation of the radiation levels and ground contamination
measured in Sweden in May 1986, as a result of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear
power plant. At present, the NIRP's most reliable estimate of the radiation dose
incurred by the most exposed persons is 4 mSv for 1986. However, the figure
depends greatly on the type of dwelling and way of life. As a background to the
figure, a number of dose levels are presented, combined with comments regarding,
for example, the risks and the requisite administrative measures to avoid them.

The radiation effects on human beings are discussed in the appendices to the report.
In addition, there is an account of the quantities and units, and their relationships,
including an explanation of how the effective dose equivalent in millisieverts can be
calculated from the measured values of the radiation level in microroentgen per hour.
The consequences of the Chernobyl accident encroach on the area of responsibility of
many government authorities and, thus, a list of those involved is also included.
