Introduction.
The Three Mile Island accident has had a profound effect on the Nuclear Industry.
It has changed the entire nature of the debate on nuclear safety. The impossible
has now happened.
Three Mile Island bas raised a number of questions fundamental to the whole
future of the nuclear power industry:
* How and why did the accident happen?
* What effect has this had on nuclear safety?
* What has been the international response?
Three Mile Island has changed the political acceptance of nuclear power. With
such widespread coverage of the accident by the media, the public has begun to
be educated about the hazards of nuclear power. To quote 'Life Magazine", " …
knowledge has informed our opinions".
The Nuclear Industry is now under political serutiny as never before, both in the
U.S. and overseas. In Sweden, major political parties have been revising their nuclear
outlooks. There have also been strong moves to force a referendum in 1980 to decide
upon Sweden's nuclear future.
Japan has also been doing some serious rethinking in the months since Harrisburg.
Its Nuclear Safety Commission has either shut down or prevented the opening of
just under half Japan's nuclear capacity.
In West Germany, the Philippines and many other countries, nuclear power
plant construction is encountering severe and widespread opposition.

The first section of this paper attempts to analyse the widespread repercussions
of Three Mile Island on the American public, on American politicians, and on
the nuclear industry in both the U.S.A. and abroad.
