ABOUT THIS BOOKLET

This booklet was researched, written and prepared by members of the Community
Energy Action Network, C.E.A.N., a volunteer organization. On August 6,1978,
Hiroshima Day, CEAN launched the People's Right to Know Campaign by offering
alternative literature to the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Visitors
Information Center. The Center's response was to close for the day. The utilities,
Southern California Edison (SCE) and San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) use this
center and sophisticated media advertising psychology (from the idyllic sounding
acronym, SONGS, to the "Environment Room" soft sell) to mislead the public by
portraying nuclear power as harmless, benign and operating in an environment free
from human error and natural disasters. The information on San Onofre provided at
the public library (as mandated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission) in Mission
Viejo is poorly catalogued and generically confused. Here is a hard look at the myths
and half-truths of nuclear power- "clean," "safe," "cheap," and "needed". The people
have the right to know the truth. This booklet is dedicated to the freedom of
information and the wisdom of an informed people to make the choice for an
ecologically sane future.
