Canada's Nuclear Expertise

In the more than 40 countries with active nuclear power programs, Canada is
renowned for its unique expertise and experience. We bring to our customers
a depth of resources not available from any other nuclear vendor. From basic
research to component manufacture, radioisotopes to reactor technology, medical
therapy equipment to power plant support services, Canada can supply know-how,
goods, and services unparalleled in the world.
Canada's nuclear program evolved from a joint development with the United States
and Britain in the early 1940s. Canada was, in fact, one of the first countries to
enter the nuclear age - our experimental ZEEP research facility was the first nuclear
reactor to go into operation outside the USA. The research performed on ZEEP and
its more sophisticated successors forms the foundation of Canada's nuclear
achievements. The launching of Canada's nuclear power program in the early 1950s
was a team effort involving industry, electrical utilities, consulting engineers, and
our national nuclear organization, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. The cooperative
approach has been maintained as the industry has grown; the success of the program
is a direct result of the commitment of the individual members of the team. Today,
our CANDU® nuclear power system stands as Canada's most outstanding
technological achievement.
As this brochure will show Canada has made an outstanding contribution to the
peaceful uses of nuclear energy through three venues:
• our power reactor industry, producer of CANDU, the system with the best
performance record in the world
• our radioisotope industry, supplier of some 65% of the radioisotopes used
worldwide today
• our uranium industry, currently the largest in the world.

Atomic Energy of Canada Limited
Leading Canada's nuclear effort is Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, a state-owned
corporation which:
• conducts nuclear research and development
• engineers the CANDU system
• provides nuclear engineering services to electrical utilities worldwide
• supplies heavy water
• manufactures medical and industrial radiation equipment
• produces radioisotopes
• develops disposal technology and processes for radioactive waste
• designs research reactors and facilities.
Rich in human and technical resources, AECL is a multi-disciplinary engineering,
research, and commercial enterprise employing 5500 people in its four operating
divisions - CANDU Operations, Research Company, Radiochemical Company, and
Medical Products Division.
