Do you remember when… To give us a richer sense of what the world was like when our company was an infant, let's travel hack through the years to l946. In Europe, the Nuremberg Trials were being held and Europeans were rebuilding their war torn cities. The first general assembly of the United Nations was held in London, England. In Canada, a royal Commission was appointed to investigate Russian spy charges resulting from the defection of Igor Gouzenko. William Lyon MacKenzie King established a record for his length of service as a Prime Minister (1935 October 23 - 1948 November 15). Discussions were taking place to bring Newfoundland into Canada. In 1947, the discovery of oil at Leduc, Alberta started Alberta's oil boom. Canadians became Canadian citizens rather than British citizens. In Ontario, due to a bottle shortage, a liquor ration was implemented limiting permit holders to one 26 ounce bottle of liquor a month. George Drew was Premier of Ontario. Locally, a game and fish racket was discovered in Maniwaki. Black-market "entrepreneurs" had been supplying fish and game to the U.S. at high prices during the meat shortage. Ottawa's Mayor was Stanley Lewis. In October 1946. Ottawa had its earliest snowfall in 58 years. Following the difficult war years, in 1946 there was an overall feeling of youthful optimism and expectation in the air. A conviction that one could make a fresh start and with hard work, build something worthwhile. This was the atmosphere in l946. This was the world being experienced by our founder, Roy Errington and his two employees back when our company began.
