Darlington Generating Station

Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, one of North America's largest energy
projects, is now being constructed by Ontario Hydro on the shore of Lake Ontario,
five kilometres south-west of Bowmanville in the Town of Newcastle. Power from
Darlington will increase the percentage of electricity produced from uranium and
reduce our dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Today, nuclear power stations provide about one third of the electricity used in
the province (coal and waterpowered stations provide the other two thirds) and
the performance of Hydro's nuclear reactors have made them world leaders. CANDU
(Canadian., Deuterium-Uranium) nuclear-electric stations also, have a minimal effect
on the environment, operating safely and economically for the benefit of Ontario's
electricity consumers.
Selected because of its proximity to the residential, industrial and commercial
energy markets of Ontario, the 485 hectare (1200 acre) Darlington site has good
transportation access, an abundant supply of cooling water from Lake Ontario,
relative isolation and excellent bedrock for station foundations.

When the four-unit station is completed in 1992, it will provide 3,524,000 kilowatts
(KW) of electricity, enough to serve a city of three million people. Electricity from
the four units (each 881,000 KW net) will be fed into the Ontario Hydro electricity
grid system through 500,000 volt transmission lines already crossing the site.
The Darlington Generating Station (GS) project was approved by the provincial
government in July 1977. Site preparation began in 1978 and by 1981, the first
concrete was poured for the station's foundations. Construction activity will peak
in 1986-1987 with approximately 6800 workers on site. When completed, the
facility will provide employment for about 750 people.
